New Years Resolutions - 2018

I have been doing New Years Resolutions for as long as I can remember, but I feel like I always write them up in December and forget all about them by the end of January. So I have promised myself to come back at the beginning of every month next year to look back at what I wrote, and to try and do better. 2017 was an interesting year for me; I became a bit more independent but I still feel like I am not as independent as I would like to be. This past year was definitely full of roller coasters, and I am thankful for all the things I have realized and been through – making me the person I am today. It was better than 2016 but this year still wasn’t as good as I hoped it would be. A lot of that is due to me not getting off my ass and out of my comfort zone. 

I have decided that I will try my best and my hardest to make 2018 my year, to overcome as many fears as I can, and to achieve as many goals as I can. Here are 5 New Years Resolutions I have for this upcoming year:


1. To Take a Walk Everyday

I remember taking walks with my family growing up and how much we would all enjoy it. Looking back now, I remember how much time I spent in 2017 just sitting in my bed and watching Netflix, usually shows I have already watched many times before already. I want to be more physically active in 2018, and although I know this might seem like an impossible task sometimes, I feel like it is something I can easily accomplish. The walks do not have to be super long and far, there is a beautiful park near my house where I can walk to everyday and breathe in some fresh air daily. As I will be leaving for British Colombia during the second week of January,  I will definitely be taking walks with my family! There will be lots of beautiful scenery to see there, and I cannot wait. Back home in Ireland and Punjab, I loved taking walks because the view was always just breathtaking. I’ve always been a country lover and the city just drains my energy, but I am going to try and change that.

2. Write in a Diary

This is something I have always wanted to do, but never did for some reason I do not understand. I feel like I express myself best through writing, and writing in a diary is such an easy way to get your thoughts out there and reflect on everything you are feeling that day or moment. I have decided to take a few pics every day while I am taking a walk, and to make a private instagram for only myself, so that I can post these photos with a caption serving as my diary entry. I will also be writing in a traditional diary. I might use one as a sort of ‘weekly journal’ of sorts, and one for daily writing! I hope to read through these entries by the end of next year and see how I have changed and become a new person. My writer’s craft teacher made us write in journals everyday in class and looking back now, I really enjoyed that and it was one of my favourite parts of class. I love the thought of being able to write down your thoughts and feelings, and being able to read them in the future.

3. Eat Healthier

To tell you the truth, I have been known to eat very unhealthily, and I wish to change that next year. I have done a lot of research and watched a lot of documentaries about the food industry and about health in general, and I absolutely want to change my eating habits. This past year, I have been drinking a can of pop almost every day. I also have not been eating in a healthy routine, and eating healthy foods in general. Although for health reasons I do want to share, I will not be going vegan, I want to be more cautious of what I put in my body. I have been a lacto vegetarian my whole life, which is already a good start for me. Nearly every week I watch “What I Eat in a Day” videos on YouTube to get healthier breakfast, lunch, and dinner ideas and recipes. If you are someone who has trouble changing unhealthy eating habits, I suggest watching these videos for motivation! They have definitely helped me in wanting to change what I eat. Although it can be very tempting to eat fast food all the time, I believe the younger you start eating healthy, the easier it is. Not to say that you cannot change your eating habits when your older. If you’re someone who wants to change your eating habits, I suggest watching videos on YouTube to motivate yourself, and to watch documentaries about the food industry to see the truth about the foods we eat!

4. Become more socially and politically aware

My family has always been very political, and we have been raised since our early childhood to stand up for our rights and for the rights of others. Being a Sikh, albeit not 100% strictly religious, I pride myself in being from a faith and community that was literally made to stand up for things such as the rights of minorities and the oppressed, for sovereignty, for justice, and for equity. I wish to stand up for all those things more in the upcoming year. I want to go to more protests, marches and demonstrations. I want to know more about the struggles of different communities so that I can make a difference. I have noticed that in the day and age of social media, many of us are quick to condemn and burn someone at the stake at the first mistake they make. People who genuinely take their time to educate someone on a topic are so rare these days in my opinion. I will always be one to 100% agree that an oppressed minority does NOT have to tolerate their oppressor, but to me it seems like lately we PoC have been using white people as punching bags, and refuse to acknowledge the oppression and discrimination happening in our own communities and countries. Yes, people of colour can be racist to one another. Being a minority does not excuse our own horrible behaviour.

I already consider myself socially and politically aware, and up-to-date with most major events taking place in the world. But by becoming more aware I mean doing more research into why things are the way they are, and what I can do to make a difference. I want to more unbiased research about different regions of the world, and different communities, and conflicts around the world. 

5. Spend more time with my family

I have struggled with separation anxiety since forever. I remember going to school and breaking down because I missed my parents too much. I still have this constant fear in the back of my head that something is about to happen and I will never see my family again. One of the things I regret is not spending enough time with my family this year. I probably spent 70% of my time locked up in my room watching Netflix and YouTube videos, or reading. While I will always enjoy those things, I need to sort out my priorities and spend more time with my family. My dad goes to work in America so he’s not always home, and I wanna spend more time with him when he is. My family will always be my top priority in life, and I regret not letting them know enough this past year. 


I am very excited for 2018, and these resolutions. In the past, I would always come up with resolutions that were really hard for me to stick to, usually do to school. This year I’ve decided to stick to fewer but easier goals, and ones that were more important to me in the long run. Let’s see how long I can stick to them!
